Dr Faisal Kamiran on VOA: Dissecting Pakistani startups and how Government initiatives can ensure their success

March 27, 2024

In his recent interview with VOA, Dr. Faisal Kamiran delved into the challenges encountered by Pakistani startups and the critical role of government initiatives in securing their success. Dr. Faisal highlighted the common pitfalls faced by local startups, emphasizing their failure to address the needs of their target audience effectively. Additionally, he underscored the impact of political instability on investor confidence, leading to reluctance in funding innovative ventures.

To address these challenges, Dr. Faisal acknowledged the IT Ministry’s commendable initiative of allocating a yearly fund of 20 million for new startups, however, he stressed that execution is key in determining the success of this initiative. He spoke about the importance of strategic investment in startups, emphasizing the need for the government to identify and support businesses with genuine potential.

Moreover, he believes that the Government will need specialized training to support these businesses in a variety of roles, e.g. a great COO might struggle with legal knowledge, so finding resources to complement these roles could be what takes them to the next level. Perhaps the most important support new startups will need from the government is to ensure smooth cash flows, as it is something that can make or break an early-stage company.
